Residual Oxygen Analysers for packaging

We ensure your quality

In food production, checking for residual oxygen in the packaging is part of quality assurance. Uncompromising cleanliness and impeccable hygiene are the be-all and end-all in food processing. This prevents microbiological contamination. The measuring instruments for checking residual oxygen can be integrated into the running process due to the fast measuring time, thus increasing economic efficiency.

Why are quality controls so important ?

The movement of foodstuffs is becoming increasingly international. As a result, the issues of safety and food waste are also becoming increasingly important. When food is exported, the processes play an important role, such as the method of transport and how the food is preserved. Problems can also arise in the packaging process. Only the smallest damage in the micrometer range can affect the packaging atmosphere and cause products to spoil.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging - what is MAP packaging ?

Spelled out, MAP means Modified Atmosphere Packaging. Manufacturers must adapt sensitive or perishable products to increasingly longer storage and delivery periods. That is why packaging is done in a modified atmosphere. In most cases, the oxygen concentration in the packaging is reduced and the CO2 concentration is increased. In this environment, aerobic microorganisms can no longer grow as well. Oxidation processes are also slowed down as a result.

Typical protective gases

Nitrogen, carbon dioxide or oxygen - all three are typical protective gases used in packaging. Often, a mixture of the gases is also used, depending on the product being packaged. All three gases are components of the ambient air, but their concentration is changed. This concentration can be checked with a residual oxygen measurement.

Possible applications

There are two types of quality assurance or uses of a residual oxygen tester. On the one hand, there is the inline leak test with a leak tester. This is carried out non-destructively, i.e. without having to damage the packaging, as well as directly and stationarily connected to the packaging process, in a defined cycle. Alternatively, the packaging can be tested for CO2 leakage in a vacuum chamber. In the case of a random sample test with an oxygen analyzer, only individual packages are tested for damage and not the entire production.

AtmoCheck® OPTIC
Optical Oxygen Analyser for random sampling of headspace AtmoCheck® OPTIC O2 is a laboratory analyser for the random quality control of residual oxygen concentrations. Utilising a state of the art optical oxygen sensor, our instrument provides reliable, fast and highly accurate results The AtmoCheck® analyser works without a pump, and can therefore be used to accurately measure O2 in extremely small headspace volumes. Examples of where this machine excells are: modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) with a minute headspace, or very small blister packs for pharmaceuticals. AtmoCheck® analysers are in a class of their own and are characterised by decades of experience, exceptional measurement performance, robust design and simple intuitive operation. In order to ensure and achieve the highest possible product quality, just rapidly test the residual oxygen content to the highest accuracy with AtmoCheck® OPTIC O2. Food Industry Applications The use of gases in the food industry in order to increase product quality and extend the shelf life of food is well established and helps to achieve: - Quality Assurance- Attractive Appearance- Extended Shelf Life- Fewer Preservatives With our AtmoCheck® OPTIC O2 analyser you can easily ensure the consistent high quality of your products by regularly checking the inert gas atmosphere. Ideal for quality control of MAP packaging with an extremely small headspace volume. - MAP Packaging- Vacuum Packaging- Liquid Products- Coffee Packaging- Coffee Capsules, Coffee Pods- Milk Powder, Milk Powder Sachets AtmoCheck® OPTIC O2 is also optionally available for use directly on the packaging machine. Pharmaceutical Industry Applications Gases used in the production of active substances and pharmaceuticals are also used in in a wide variety of areas and for various requirements, for example: - as high purity gases for the laboratory- as specialty gases for research and development- as process gases for manufacturing processes such as chemical synthesis- as inert gases for the removal of atmospheric oxygen- as gases for sterile processes- as traceable gases for GMP requirements- as gas mixtures for measurements in the laboratory or in environmentals- as gases for the cultivation of organic crops Many pharmaceutical products are very sensitive to atmospheric oxygen and moisture. Packaging in a protective atmosphere effectively prevents drugs from losing their effectiveness. The shelf life of therapeutic proteins in particular, which may be produced using nitrogen, is significantly extended. AtmoCheck® OPTIC O2 can optionally be used for the measurement of dissolved oxygen in a liquid.   Special Features AtmoCheck® OPTIC O2 can be used in extreme conditions where traditional gas analysers cannot operate. The challenge of creating a sensor capable of measuring a miniscule headspace was to protect the sensor from food particles, powder or liquid. This was achieved with our new Optical Sensor Technology. The outstanding feature of AtmoCheck® OPTIC O2, is that the Sensor is the only item that ever requires cleaning, and this is simplicity itself, taking literally only a few seconds. In order to remove all soiling caused by either dry or liquid product residues that may remain on the sensor, all you need is just a glass of water. Simply place the tip of the sensor into the water and stir it for a couple of seconds. The sensor is then ready for use again within the shortest possible time. The AtmoCheck® OPTIC O2 is therefore virtually impervious to both solid and/or liquid contaminants. AtmoCheck® OPTIC O2 is intuitive, easy and safe to use. With a simple tap on the user interface you can control all functions; select products, create new products or users, etc. Display of measured values, selected product, measuring time and limit values are clearly displayed on the large 10" touch display.

AtmoCheck® LT
AtmoCheck® LT
Leak tester for CO2 cylinders Highly precise, reliable and fast As an alternative to purchasing bottles of sparkling water in PET & glass bottles, more and more households and companies are using carbonation devices to create on demand sparkling mineral water. There is a significant economic and environmental benefit. These devices utilise CO2 cylinders that require refilling before being resupplied back into the market. After repeated refilling, leaks can occur at the output valves, which at the point of refilling, cannot be detected by traditional methods e.g. leakage spray. To prevent dangerous leaking cylinders reaching the trade and private markets (or even an empty cylinder leading to customer complaints), all cylinders should be checked for even the smallest leaks, directly after filling. AtmoCheck® LT is an effective quality control instrument for simultaneously leak testing up to 8 or more (optional) CO2 cylinders. Even the smallest leaks can be detected using our reliable CO2 infrared sensor technology. This unit provides you with a highly reliable leak test procedure in order to increase your quality assurance and safe handling of gases! By means of compressed air and a venturi nozzle a slight vacuum is created at the extraction valve. Highly sensitive CO2 infrared sensors draw in the sample gas and detect even the smallest CO2 concentrations in the ppm range. The measuring times (<10 sec.) and threshold target values can be freely assigned, so you can individually identify the leaking cylinder(s) and immediately remove it/them from production. AtmoCheck® LT allows configuration of user and product settings, passwords and data logging configuration etc.
